Unanswered Questions About Toby From Paranormal Activity

Okay, so, you know how we’re all obsessed with Paranormal Activity? Like, seriously obsessed. We’ve watched them all, probably more times than we’d care to admit, right? And while we're all busy freaking out about Katie and Micah and whatever that thing is, there’s this one question that’s been bugging me. Like, a lot. Who is Toby, really?

I mean, we hear the name. We see the spooky stuff. But the movies are surprisingly tight-lipped about him. It’s like, “Oh yeah, that’s Toby, the demon.” Uh, thanks for the info, directors. Real helpful. Is he a disgruntled ghost? A demon with a particularly bad case of separation anxiety? Or is he just a really, really clingy ex who also happens to be invisible and capable of moving furniture?

Seriously, though, Toby. Toby, Toby, Toby. We’re supposed to be terrified of him, and don't get me wrong, he is terrifying. The way he just… is. There’s no grand entrance, no booming voice, just… presence. And a whole lot of creepy whispers. But I feel like we deserve a little more backstory, don't you? Like, what’s his deal? Did he have a favorite cereal growing up? Did he ever stub his toe? These are the important questions, people!

Think about it. Every other monster in the horror universe has a story. Freddy Krueger had a past, right? Jason Voorhees, well, he had a mom, which is… something. Even the guy in the Jigsaw mask had a whole elaborate setup. But Toby? He’s just… there. A shadowy figure, a malevolent force, a bad roommate from hell, and we’re just supposed to accept it? My inner detective is screaming!

And the cult stuff! Oh, the cult. That’s where things get really fuzzy. In the later movies, especially, they start hinting at this whole demonic coven, this ancient order that worships Toby. But who are these people? Are they just a bunch of weirdos who like wearing robes and chanting? Or are they actual, you know, worshippers? Like, did they sacrifice goats? Did they have a loyalty card program?

It’s a classic horror trope, the creepy cult. And the Paranormal Activity franchise definitely leans into it. But it feels like they're holding back on us. They show us the aftermath, the ritualistic stuff, the creepy symbols. But they rarely show us the why. Why are they so devoted to this… entity? What does Toby offer them that makes it worth all the spooky chanting and, you know, potentially selling their souls?

Is it power? Is it an afterlife he’s promising? Or is it just really good coffee? Because honestly, if I had to pick a reason to join a cult, it would have to be amazing coffee. Forget eternal damnation, I need caffeine!

Then there's the whole "possession" angle. Toby seems to be really good at jumping from person to person, or at least influencing them. We see it with Katie, obviously. She's like his personal ferry. But then he’s in Ali, and potentially others too. Is it like a parasite? Does he just latch onto whoever’s vulnerable?

It makes me wonder about the mechanics of it all. Does he have a finite number of possessions he can manage? Is there a waiting list? Is it like renting an apartment? “Oh, sorry, that body’s already taken. Maybe try again next year when it becomes available?” It’s a terrifying thought, isn’t it?

And what about his feelings? Does Toby get lonely? Does he ever just sit there in the dark, staring at the ceiling, wondering if he made the right decision by choosing eternal torment over, say, a nice beach vacation? Does he miss his mom? Okay, that’s probably a stretch, but you get my point. He’s presented as this primal force, but wouldn't it be even scarier if he had some… emotional complexity? Imagine a demon crying because his favorite rock album is out of print!

The movies often focus on the effects of Toby’s presence, not the cause. We see the doors slam, the poltergeist activity, the unsettling shadows. But we rarely get a glimpse into his motivations. Is he bored? Is he vengeful? Is he just a cosmic prankster with a really dark sense of humor?

The fact that he’s so elusive makes him that much more frightening, I guess. It’s the unknown, right? But a little peek behind the curtain wouldn’t hurt, would it? Like, maybe a brief flashback sequence where he’s a baby demon, just learning to float and make things fall off shelves? That would be adorable. And then, BAM! Terror.

And let’s talk about his name. Toby. It’s such a… normal name. Like, the name of a guy who works in accounting, or maybe a friendly dog walker. It’s the antithesis of a terrifying demon name. Is that part of the plan? To lull us into a false sense of security? “Oh, it’s just Toby. He probably wants to borrow some sugar.” And then, BAM! Your soul is forfeit.

It’s almost like the creators of Paranormal Activity are playing a game with us. They’re dangling these questions, these tantalizing hints, and then snatching them away. It’s a psychological torment, I tell you. A meta-torment, even.

Then there’s the whole family connection. In the later films, it becomes clear that Toby has been a presence in Katie’s family for generations. Like, a really long time. He’s like the creepy uncle who always shows up at family gatherings, except instead of awkward small talk, he brings existential dread. Did he have a favorite niece? Did he ever bake cookies for them?

It begs the question: why this family? Was it just random chance? Or is there something special about the Fleeges or the Renders that attracted Toby’s attention? Is it their inherent goodness? Their inherent… susceptibility? Are they just really good at attracting paranormal attention, like a magnet for malevolent spirits?

And what about his powers? We see him move things, whisper, cause people to freak out. But is that the extent of it? Could he, like, make toast? Could he fold laundry? These are the practical questions I need answered! I mean, if you’re going to be an all-powerful, soul-devouring entity, you might as well have some useful skills, right?

The lack of concrete answers about Toby is, I think, what makes the Paranormal Activity series so enduringly creepy. He’s the ultimate unknown. He’s the boogeyman in his purest, most undefined form. He’s whatever your imagination conjures up, and that, my friends, is often far scarier than anything a director could explicitly show you.

But still. A little bit of lore wouldn’t kill us. Or, I guess, it might. If Toby were to read this, he’d probably be like, “You want to know my life story? Fine. It involves a lot of darkness, a few questionable life choices, and a strong desire to make humans scream.” And then he’d probably possess my laptop. And then I’d have to write a sequel about my own possessed computer. The horror!

The truth is, Toby is a mystery wrapped in an enigma, tied with a very spooky, very invisible bow. And maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be. He’s the ghost in the machine, the demon in the data, the reason we double-check the locks at night. He’s the question mark at the end of every terrifying sentence. And even though I’ll never stop wondering, I’ll also never stop checking under the bed. Thanks, Toby. You’re a real gem.
