Supernatural Season 10 Episode 22 Review The Prisoner

Well, hello there, fellow hunters and demon-slayers! Grab your comfy couch and your favorite salt shaker, because we're diving headfirst into the wonderfully weird world of Supernatural Season 10, Episode 22, titled "The Prisoner." And let me tell you, this episode was a wild ride that managed to be both incredibly tense and surprisingly… well, surprisingly them.

First off, let's talk about the elephant in the room, or rather, the very grumpy, very powerful angel in the room: Castiel. Or, as he was mostly known in this episode, a puppet. Yes, you heard that right. Our beloved Cas was being controlled by the big, bad angel himself, Metatron. Imagine your favorite teddy bear suddenly spouting evil pronouncements and trying to, you know, take over the universe. That's kind of the vibe, but with a lot more celestial drama and considerably less fluff.

Metatron, in his infinite wisdom (and by infinite, I mean really, really annoying), decided that the best way to achieve his angelic world domination plans was to use Cas as his personal butler. And not even a butler who gets decent tips. This was more like a slave who occasionally gets to wear a slightly-too-big trench coat. The sight of our usually stoic and sometimes awkward angel forced to do Metatron's bidding was both hilarious and utterly heartbreaking. I mean, watching Cas try to explain away his weird, out-of-character actions to Sam and Dean was pure comedy gold. You could practically see the internal screaming happening behind his perpetually concerned eyes.

And speaking of Sam and Dean, they were their usual selves, which is to say, worried sick and ready to punch a celestial being if necessary. Sam, bless his patient heart, was the voice of reason, trying to figure out what was going on with Cas. Dean, on the other hand, was mostly just furious and probably wanted to throw a baseball bat at Metatron's head, which, honestly, who can blame him? Their unwavering devotion to each other and to Cas, even when things looked impossibly grim, is what makes this show so special. It's that brotherly bond, that found family they've built, that keeps them going.

"It's the classic 'one of us is possessed/controlled' storyline, but with a divine twist, and as always, the Winchesters rise to the occasion, even when it means potentially hurting someone they love to save them."

The episode really played on the idea of control and free will. Metatron thought he had it all figured out, that he could just bend everyone to his will. But he clearly underestimated the sheer stubbornness of the Winchester boys and the deep well of goodness that even a corrupted Castiel possesses. The scenes where Sam and Dean were trying to reach Cas, trying to break through Metatron's control, were surprisingly emotional. There were moments of genuine hope mixed with the crushing despair of seeing Cas struggle.

One of the most fun parts, for me at least, was seeing Metatron’s increasingly ridiculous demands. Like, who knew conquering heaven would involve so much… administrative work? And the way he tried to sound all profound while being utterly petty was just chef's kiss. It’s like your really annoying coworker who thinks they're a genius but just keeps asking for favors and making everyone else do the actual work.

The climax of the episode was, as expected, a showdown. And what a showdown it was! The brothers, armed with their grit and determination (and probably a few strategically placed holy water bottles), went head-to-head with the Metatron-controlled Castiel. The fight choreography was, as always, on point. But it wasn't just about the punches and the magic; it was about the struggle for Cas's soul. And when Dean finally managed to get through to him, that moment of recognition in Cas's eyes? Pure, unadulterated fan service in the best possible way. It was that flicker of the real Castiel, the one who’d rather be serving burgers than plotting cosmic coups, that made all the tension worth it.

And let's not forget the heartwarming reunion, or rather, the tentative steps back towards normalcy. The way Sam and Dean immediately checked on Cas, the quiet gratitude in his voice, it was all the feels. Even though Metatron was still out there, the immediate threat was dealt with, and our trio was, once again, a trio. It's these moments of connection, these small victories in the face of overwhelming odds, that make Supernatural more than just a monster-of-the-week show. It's about family, loyalty, and the enduring power of love, even when angels are being jerks.

So, "The Prisoner" might have been a bit of a nail-biter, but it was also a testament to what makes Supernatural so enduringly lovable. It's the ability to throw in some truly menacing villains, then somehow manage to weave in humor, heart, and those precious brotherly moments that make you want to high-five your TV. And honestly, after everything they've been through, seeing our favorite angel back in his own body, even if he was a little shell-shocked, was a win we could all appreciate.
