Oh, the movies! We love them for the heroes who save the day, the villains who make us squirm (in a good way, mostly!), and the romances that make our hearts flutter. But sometimes, just sometimes, a character comes along who makes us feel a little bit… sad. Like, a lump-in-your-throat, “aw, buddy” kind of sad. These are the characters who, despite their best efforts, or maybe because of them, just can't catch a break. They stumble, they falter, and we, from the comfy sofa, find ourselves rooting for them to just, you know, have one good day. So, grab your tissues (or maybe just a comfy blanket) because we’re diving into seven movie characters we felt a colossal amount of sympathy for!
These are the folks who make you want to jump through the screen and give them a giant hug, or at least a really good sandwich. We've all been there, right? Feeling a bit lost, a bit misunderstood, a bit like life's just thrown you a curveball when you were expecting a gentle lob. These characters? They're the masters of the curveball.
First up, we have E.T. from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Poor little guy! Lost, alone, and with a glowing finger that probably got him into a lot of trouble. He just wanted to go home, and all he got was a bunch of scientists poking him and a bunch of kids trying to make him a better human. Honestly, the whole bike flying thing was cool and all, but can we talk about the emotional toll of being stranded on a planet where everyone wears shoes? It’s a tragedy, really. He was so gentle, so misunderstood, and his friendship with Elliott was the purest thing ever. When he finally had to leave… cue the waterworks. We were all Elliott, waving goodbye to our alien bestie, hoping he’d send a postcard.
Then there's WALL-E. This little trash-collecting robot. Talk about a thankless job! For centuries, he’s been diligently compacting garbage on a deserted Earth, all by himself. Imagine the solitude! He’s got a personality bigger than his clunky frame, finding joy in a plastic spork and a dusty VHS tape. His quest for connection, for a bit of love (especially with EVE!), is so profoundly moving. He’s a testament to finding beauty and purpose even in the most desolate circumstances. We just wanted him to find his spark, his purpose beyond picking up after humanity. And when he finally did, with EVE by his side, our robot-loving hearts soared!
Let's not forget Boo from Monsters, Inc.. Okay, technically she’s a kid, but in the monster world, she's basically an existential threat! She’s just a little girl, full of curiosity and adorable giggles, who accidentally wanders into a world designed to scare her. And what’s her reaction? Not screaming terror (mostly), but pure, unadulterated wonder. She sees the monsters for what they truly are – big, clumsy, and surprisingly cuddly. Her dependence on Sully and Mike, and their growing affection for her, is so sweet it’s almost sickly. When they have to smuggle her back home, it felt like a mission of utmost importance, because we, too, had fallen in love with that tiny, bright-eyed kid. The thought of her being alone again was just too much to bear.

Moving on, we have Kevin Flynn from Tron and Tron: Legacy. This guy had his whole life stolen from him! His game company, his son, his reality – all snatched away by the evil MCP. He spends years trapped in the digital world, fighting for survival, just waiting for someone to find him. It's like being grounded forever, but with more neon lights and less chance of a snack. He’s a programmer who became a pawn in his own creation. When he finally gets out, or even just reconnects with his son, you can’t help but feel a pang of relief for him. He deserved a happy ending, a chance to finally just play his own game, and maybe even a decent cup of coffee.
Then there’s the sheer, unadulterated pathos of Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. Okay, okay, we know he says "I am Groot." But the way he says it! That one phrase carries the weight of a thousand emotions. Especially when he sacrifices himself for his friends, saying that final, heartbreaking "We are Groot." We were all there, clutching our metaphorical Groot figurines, weeping openly. He was a gentle giant, a protector, a friend, and his absence was felt by every single one of us. Even when Baby Groot came along, a piece of our hearts remained with the original, stoic guardian.

Consider John Coffey from The Green Mile. Just saying his name probably makes you feel a bit of that familiar ache. He’s a gentle giant with a heart of gold and the power to heal, but the world around him is cruel and unjust. His innocence in the face of such darkness is devastating. He’s a man who can’t catch a break, who carries the weight of the world’s suffering, and who ultimately has to face an unfair fate. Every moment of his journey on that mile is a gut-punch, a reminder of how good people can suffer in a bad world. We just wanted him to be free, to live a peaceful life, to not have to carry all that pain.
And finally, let’s talk about Carl Fredricksen from Up. This grumpy old man. At first, he seems like he’s just a curmudgeon who wants to be left alone. But as we peel back the layers, we see a man consumed by grief and regret, clinging to the memory of his lost love, Ellie. His house, a symbol of their shared dreams, becomes his escape pod. His adventure, initially driven by a promise, turns into a journey of rediscovery and, dare we say, a little bit of happiness. We felt for the lonely, heartbroken man who had lost the love of his life. Seeing him finally find companionship and a new purpose, even with a talking dog and a mischievous boy scout, was incredibly heartwarming. He truly deserved to have his balloons lift his spirits, both literally and figuratively.

These characters, in their own unique ways, remind us that it’s okay to feel for the fictional folks on screen. They tap into our own vulnerabilities, our own desires for kindness and understanding. And in feeling sorry for them, we often end up feeling a little more connected to our own humanity. So, here’s to the sad sacks, the underdogs, and the characters who just couldn't catch a break – they’ve earned our sympathy, and a permanent spot in our movie-loving hearts!
