Is Joker 2 Really Necessary

So, Joker 2 is happening. Yep. They’re really going for it. The movie that gave us Joaquin Phoenix doing that... well, that dance. And now we’re getting more of it. More Arthur Fleck. More brooding. More… Gotham’s greatest existential crisis. The big question on everyone’s lips, probably whispered over their morning coffee or while scrolling through social media: Is this a good idea? Is it necessary?

Let’s be honest, the first Joker was a whole vibe. It was dark. It was gritty. It made us think. It also made some people incredibly uncomfortable. And it made a boatload of money. Apparently, that’s all the justification needed for a sequel these days. Money talks, and it’s apparently shouting, “Give us more sad clowns!”

Think about it. The first movie was a self-contained story, right? Arthur Fleck’s descent into madness. His transformation from a misunderstood outcast to… well, the Joker. He got his moment. He had his catharsis. He even had a whole cult following by the end. What else could there possibly be to say? Are we just going to watch him… do more bad stuff? Maybe have a really intense therapy session that goes horribly wrong?

My gut feeling is that sometimes, sequels are born out of a fear of not having a good idea. Like, “Okay, that first one did well. Let’s just… do that again, but maybe with more singing this time?” Because, surprise! It’s a musical. Yes, you read that right. Joker: Folie à Deux. Which, if my Duolingo streak means anything, means “madness for two.” So, we’re getting Arthur Fleck and… who else? Lady Gaga is apparently playing Harley Quinn. Okay, that’s… unexpected. Suddenly, the "necessary" question gets a whole lot more complicated. Or maybe just more confusing.

Now, I’m not saying it’s going to be bad. Lady Gaga is a powerhouse. She can sing, she can act, she can probably pull off a sparkly, psychotic jester outfit with more flair than most of us can manage to put on socks. Joaquin Phoenix is… well, he is the Joker. He embodied that character in a way that felt both terrifying and, in a weird, dark way, almost sympathetic. So, the talent is definitely there.

But does that automatically make it necessary? Is it going to add some profound new layer to the Joker mythos? Or is it just going to be a really elaborate, expensive way to explore Arthur's daddy issues… with a soundtrack? Because, let’s face it, the Joker is a character who thrives in ambiguity. We don’t need to know his entire life story. Sometimes, the mystery is what makes him so compelling. He’s the embodiment of chaos, not a character you can neatly tie up with a song and dance.

"Do we really need to see the Joker get a duet partner?"

The first film was a character study. It was about one man’s unraveling. Adding Harley Quinn, especially in a musical format, feels like it’s shifting gears quite dramatically. Are we going from a gritty character study to… a tragic opera? A Weimar-era cabaret gone rogue? I’m picturing dramatic spotlights, smoky backrooms, and a lot of dramatic glances. And maybe a few too many musical numbers about why society is unfair. Which, again, we kind of got the message on the first time around.

Maybe I’m just old-fashioned. Maybe I’m just a cynic who believes that some stories are best left as they are. The original Joker felt like a complete arc. Arthur’s journey was painful, messy, and ultimately… finished. Introducing a love interest, even one as iconic as Harley Quinn, feels like it risks diluting the impact of his singular descent. It’s like taking a perfectly baked cake and deciding to add sprinkles… to the point where you can’t even taste the cake anymore.

Then again, maybe I’m underestimating the creative team. Maybe they have something brilliant up their sleeves. Maybe this musical element isn’t just a gimmick, but a way to explore the psychological depths of both characters in a truly innovative way. Perhaps the songs will be about their shared madness, their twisted connection, their mutual disdain for… everything. It could be amazing. It could be a masterpiece.

But, and this is a big “but,” the operative word here is "could." And for every "could be amazing" sequel, there are a dozen "why did they even bother?" sequels. And given the sheer, unadulterated weirdness of a Joker musical, it’s hard not to lean towards the latter. Do we really need to see the Joker get a duet partner? Does his psychosis necessitate a choreographed dance number?

Ultimately, the necessity of Joker 2 is subjective, isn’t it? If it brings joy (or, you know, unsettling entertainment) to enough people, then maybe it is necessary. But for those of us who were perfectly content with Arthur’s tragic, solitary dance into madness, the question remains: was this the best use of such brilliant talent? Only time, and possibly a lot of show tunes, will tell. Until then, I’ll be over here, cautiously optimistic, and also a little bit terrified of what’s to come.
